To lower pollution, it became imperative to integrate as much renewable energies as possible in power systems. This has been translated into forcing the maximum production of variable renewable energy (VRE) ---wind and solar--- into power systems operation. The increasing operational costs to maximize the VRE output became the price to pay in order to lower pollution. However, here we show that it is a misconception that forcing VRE production always lowers pollution. We present some examples illustrating that, apart from increasing costs, forcing VRE production can also increase pollution.
Time: 25 of January, 16:00-17:00 (CET) Presenter: Germán Morales-España (TNO) Please register here The webinar is organized in collaboration with IAEE Policy makers across Europe have implemented renewable support policies with several policy objectives in mind. Among these are achieving ambitious renewable energy targets at the lowest cost, reducing CO2-emissions, and promoting technology improvement through learning-by-doing. Using an EU-wide transmission-constrained electricity market model, COMPETES, we address the question of how policies that subsidize renewable energy (e.g., feed-in premia, renewable portfolio standards) versus capacity (e.g., investment subsidies) impact the mix of renewable investments, electricity costs, renewable share, CO2 emissions, the amount of subsidies, and consumer prices in the EU power market in 2030 and how they interact with other policies such as the EU ETS.

We are pleased to invite you for the General Assembly of Members of the BAEE which will be held during the Workshop "Flexibility in EU electricity Markets" in Antwerp, Friday 13 December 2019 from 13:00-13:30. Agenda
Board Vacancies We have 3 board vacancies, as Danielle Devogelaer, Laurens de Vries and Hamilcar Knops will leave the board after the General Assembly. If you want to join the General Meeting, please contact the BAEE secretary using our web form. ![]() The Benelux Association for Energy Economics (BAEE) and the Department of Economics at the University of Antwerp warmly welcome you to the policy workshop: Flexibility in EU electricity markets. The transition from a conventional fossil-fuel dominated electricity market to a low-carbon one with intermittent generation calls for sufficient flexible supply and demand sources to balance the energy system. This policy workshop will highlight economic fundamentals of flexibility markets, the current regulatory framework and the policy challenges. More info on our website. It was a great pleasure to co-organized the 41st IAEE International Conference in Groningen. We can look back at a successful conference with many great speakers and visitors. About 650 delegates from all over the world spoke on a wide variety of subjects within the energy economics field. The central theme of the conference, Transforming Energy Markets, has been discussed in 7 plenary sessions, 6 round tables and 91 concurrent sessions. In addition we offered 3 poster sessions, 3 master classes, 1 doctoral seminar, 2 technical excursions and a varied social programme.
With 32 participants from a wide range of institutes and organizations from both Belgium and the Netherlands, the 6th BAEE Research Workshop in Leuven can be termed a success! Over the course of one inspiring day, we had 14 presentations running in two parallel tracks. Paper topics were at the crossroads of economic, technical, regulatory and legal issues. Each presentation featured two discussants, providing valuable feedback, and triggering on-topic discussions. We are already looking forward to next year’s event!
The BAEE, the IAEE, the Energy Academy Europe and the University of Groningen have the pleasure to invite you to attend the 41st IAEE international conference that will be held in Groningen, the Netherlands on 10-13 June 2018. The call for papers for this conference has now been published. More information on the conference and its call for papers can be found here. The deadline for submission is 8 January 2018.
The BAEE will hold its 6th annual Research Workshop on Energy Economics on Friday, November 10, 2017 at the University of Leuven. This workshop offers researchers from the Benelux the opportunity to present a paper on energy economics and to interact with colleagues. More information on this event and the paper submission process can be found here.
On May 12 WISE and the BAEE jointly organised a seminar on emission trading and energy transition. The seminar was hosted by PBL. A report on this successful seminar with 75 participants from academia, business and government is available on the website of WISE.
The general meeting of BAEE members 2017 will take place on May 12 from 12:30 to 13:30 at PBL in The Hague (Bezuidenhoutseweg 30, 2594 AV Den Haag). The board of the BAEE hereby invites all members to attend. This general meeting will take place prior to the seminar 'Emissiehandel en energietransitie', which is co-organised by the BAEE.
